About

The Anthropocene —from anthropo, for “man,” and cene, for “new” is a proposed epoch dating from the commencement of significant human impact on the Earth’s geology and ecosystems, because human-kind has caused mass extinctions of plant and animal species, polluted the oceans and altered the atmosphere causing anthropogenic climate change, among other lasting impacts.

So what is this blog site about?

It’s primarily about us, Amanda and Chris, and our thoughts, interests, and activities. That said, it will hopefully also be about Virginia, Loudoun County, and the inspiring people we meet in our activities.  There are a lot of people working very hard to have a positive affect on conservation, and if those stories can be told here, that would be something we’d welcome. It might also be about projects completely unrelated to the environment. Recipes, woodworking projects, hobbies…. things of that sort. We have a happy and healthy marriage, and might share tips that we think of on how to build a happy and healthy marriage. Really whatever we find interesting and/or potentially helpful to the community around us is fair game.

Why a blog site?

There are a few reasons. For one thing, social media is sometimes a game played based on someone else’s rule set. One never really knows whether their messaging is reaching their intended audience, and paying to “boost” a post isn’t something that we’re able to do very often.  Most social networking sites aren’t usually great for long articles, which we’ll probably post once in a while here.

For another thing, it’s sometimes hard to know who is interested in our more political or overtly environmentally focused activities among our family and friends. A blog site is a convenient way to put that content in a place for easy consumption. We have thoughts in our heads that we sometimes want to get out onto virtual paper, and whether or not anyone reads them, a blog is a good place to do that.

Is the blog site to make money?

No. Not for us anyway. This is our space…and frankly we reserve the right to do whatever we want with it. That said, we have no interest in slapping up a bunch of ads, and sculpting our content to get search traffic and ad clicks. If we ever put ads on the site, they’ll likely be to promote an organization, candidate for elected office, or something else that we believe in. As far as what counts as an “ad”, we’ll leave that up to you, dear reader.

Is the content appropriate for kids?

Some certainly will be, but as an entire body of content, probably not. We might use foul language here, and talk about scary or depressing topics like species extinction, or sexual assault. We’ll certainly have criticisms of elected officials that might come across as rude. If we were to assign a rating to the site, PG-13 is probably appropriate.

Restrictions

We’re privacy advocates. We won’t be posting anything about other people that compromises their privacy. This can be a little bit difficult. If you take a photo in a public place, like a protest in DC, people in that photo have no reasonable expectation of privacy under the law. That said, in many other cases we find privacy law insufficient, and will try to err on the side of respecting the privacy of others.
